U18/Minors – BORN 2000/2001 ONLY
The Orchard county arrived in the tranquil setting of Dundrum Bay for what was a winner takes all contest. Having been slow out of the blocks in previous game this was no different for the Mourne ladies as the towering figure of Dearbhla Colman plucked the throw in out of the air, ran the length of the pitch and buried the ball into the Down net. The first twenty minutes Armagh were in control of this encounter as the continually interchanged positions leaving their Down counterparts in a state of confusion. The call from the line to just stay with your own player worked and the ladies began to get a foothold in the game clawing their way to parity at the end of the half. The second half saw the Down ladies start in a better fashion and with the aid of the breeze began to pull away into a five-point lead but were being wasteful up front with no one seeming to want the responsibility of taking a shot. The sin binning of Armagh’s Abbie Mulholland midway through the second half should have been the catalyst the Mourne ladies needed to put this game to bed, however Armagh dug deep and started to eat into Down’s lead getting it to just a point entering added time. These six added minutes felt like an hour as ladies in red and black stood firm under constant pressure, a testament to the strength of character they all have, the sound of the long whistle came leaving Down winners by the narrowest of margins, final score Down 3-10 Armagh 4-06. This result guarantees Down an Ulster final which is thoroughly deserved as the entire squad has trained hard through the winter months and bonded well to form an extremely hard team to beat. Down Kirstin Rooney, Eric Rafferty, Ciara Byrne, Ciara Mc Kenna, Niamh Scullion, Beth O Niell, Alice Mc Alea (0-01, Sasha Boyle (0-02, Aoibheann Mc Carville (0-02), Orla Duffy (0-02), Eric Rogers (0-01), Cristin Brown (1-00), Orla Swail (2-01) Taylor Poland, Sarah Dougherty (0-01). Subs Maria Mc Cann for Sarah Dougherty Anna Mc Kee for Eric Rogers.
Down U16 – BORN 2002 ONLY
The girls would like to thank Stephen Kane from Kilcoo who joined on Sunday’s session at a wet and windy Ballykinlar. Stephen gave the girls lots of encouragement and practical advice on how to improve aspects of their game. Following on from this every girl played their part in completing their fundraising Marathon of Toe taps. Despite the wind and rain, which we are very used to, the girls continued to add the fun element into their football. Many thanks to everyone who sponsored the girls and also many thanks to Ballykinlar for the use of their facilities. Opponents for u16c preliminary round has been confirmed as Derry. This game will be played on Sunday 29th April venue to be confirmed.
Down U15 – BORN 2003 ONLY
The girls had a great win over Monaghan yesterday with final score Down 6.02 Monaghan 2.03. The girls really dug in deep and worked hard to fight out the win! The girls have a trip to Derry this Saturday for their next game! Full details to follow on social media and WhatsApp.
Down U14 – BORN 2004 ONLY
The Down U14 ladies hosted near neighbours Armagh in Ballymartin in a battle for runners-up spot in Group 1 of the Ulster Championship. Winners of this game would guarantee themselves a spot in either an ‘A’ or ‘B’ grade Ulster Final. This turned out to be one mighty battle between two well drilled outfits who went toe to toe. It was Armagh who struck first with a goal that deceived everyone. It took the Mourne ladies about 10 minutes to settle into the game and boy did they settle, scoring 4 goals before the break sandwiched by some wonderful points. Indeed, Down could have been further ahead if not for some wonderful saves by the Armagh keeper. Half-time score Down 4-4 Armagh 2-2. It was Armagh who came storming back after the break with some wonderful runs from the half back line to run off a number of well taken points, backed up by two goals to go three points up with 10 minutes to play. It was backs to the wall stuff in that period for Down, as they tried desperately to break up the Armagh surge.
Eventually Down did break forward and secured a well taken goal backed up by a point to go one up. Two further points got Down over the line by three against a very accomplished Armagh outfit, who played some wonderful football. Final score Down 6-6 Armagh 4-9. A mighty well done to all 32 ladies on this squad who push each other on at every session and give 110% on the field of play every time they pull on that Down jersey. The ladies now play Cavan on Saturday 28 April in an Ulster semi-final with the winners progressing to the final.
Down U13 – BORN 2005 ONLY
The girls had their final training session on Saturday morning. Coaches thanked all players for the dedication put in over the winter months. Match against Armagh has been confirmed for 22 April and we still plan to play Derry on 28 April. Transportation details will be published shortly.
