Each month during the club season we are picking a Club Person Of The Month in association with Balon Sports. The Award is designed to recognise the efforts of players, coaches, groundskeepers and even tea makers that go above and beyond for the club. This month’s award goes to John McCarthy of Kilkerley Emmets GFC in Louth.
Yvonne Quigley told us “Nothing is ever too much trouble to this man from pitch marking, coaching u-10 girls, washing jerseys. He’s the heart beat of our club. He inspired me to play football when he was my teacher and is still advising me to play at 45”.
She sent on to say “He was a huge force am the 80’s getting Cumann n.a. Mbunscol in Louth and to letting girls play on the school team when it was only boys were allowed. Then he elected me as captain in a final to break the mould even more. Supporting girls in football before we had ladies football”.
Kevin McEnteggart, Chairman of the club added his comments by saying ” John McCarthy has been & continues to be the embodiment of community volunteerism, particularly for youth in the GAA since his arrival in our parish over 40 years ago as a cool 19 year old teacher from Cork. His continued enthusiasm and commitment to all that’s good and important in underage GAA sets the example for our mentors, players and parents alike. Cork’s loss has certainly been Kilkerley Emmets GFC’s gain”.
Well done John!
