Carlow Made it two wins out of Two games in the Ladies Division Four Lidl league. The Carlow girls travelled minus a number of girls who were on Ashbourne cup Camogie duty but the game finished Limerick 2-9, Carlow 4-4.

The game started at a blistering pace and Limerick were first off the mark with a Mairead Kavanagh from play but after that it was the Carlow girls who took control. Points from Cliodhna Na She and Lauren Dwyer had the Carlow Girls in front. In fact the Bennekerry-Tinryland corner forward Dwyer would finish with a personal tally of four goals and a point.

Just before the half time break a long ball out of defence found Dwyer and she beat four defenders to finish to the Limerick net. Cliodhna Na She added a point that was cancelled out by an injury time Catriona Davis free to leave the half time score 1-3 to 0-2 to the Carlow girls.

Carlow got a tonic start to the second half when Lauren Dwyer had her second goal – a fortuitous goal but one that her and her team’s hard work deserved.

Last year All Ireland champions response was swift and impressive though and they went straight up the field when Davis was fouled for a penalty. She dispatched the penalty herself to the net to leave it 2-3 to 1-3.

Limerick were on top now and they looked to pile on the pressure. Caroline Hickey reduced the lead soon after and the Barrow girls looked on the ropes. But again some great defending repelled Limerick and when Dwyer goaled again the lead was now seven.

Limerick once again showed the character of champions and two Davis frees kept them in touch. As the game entered the closing stages Limerick were awarded another penalty which seemed on the soft side – with Davis off the field of play due to yellow card, captain Cathy Mee coolly tucked-away the penalty giving Nicole Hanley in the goal no chance. Kristy Carroll added a point for Limerick and now the lead was one.

But these Carlow girls showed some great character and they went up the field and when the ball found Dwyer she cooly slotted the ball past the helpless keeper who had made a great save in the build-up. Edel Hayden followed up with the best score of the game and Carlow were now four up. Limerick didn’t throw in the towel and Katie Heelan hit back with a point.

Davis who had now returned from the sin bin slotted two frees and Limerick were primed for the great escape again.

In injury time there was almost a winning goal but Anne Roche cleared the ball and the day belonged to Carlow. This was a great result for this Carlow team. Gerry McGill and his backroom team will be please with many aspects of the game and while there is plenty to work on this team looks like it is going in the right direction. The girls next game is on the 23rd of February where they will travel to Derry.
