Down Senior Ladies began their 2020 All Ireland Championship Campaign with a journey to Lannleire GFC, Co. Louth to face Meath Ladies on Sunday last.

The first quarter seen both teams defence working hard to close off space for any attacks. Down had some great chances in the first half, but struggled to turn their possession into scores. Down defence along with Megan Doherty as a sweeper worked well, putting pressure on the Meath attack and forcing wides. At half time Down went in 0-00 to Meath 0-08.

Down came out fighting in the second half winning the ball from throw in. They showed great aggression and tenacity despite the wintery conditions, putting Meath under pressure early on. Down got their first score in the 34th minute, a point by Natasha Ferris. Jessica Foy put a further 0-02 over the bar from frees. A great save by Burns denied Meath a goal chance in the last quarter.

The girls found more momentum in the last quarter and a superb goal by Jessica Foy in the 51st minute spurred the girls on. Foy scored a further 0-03 bringing Down within a point of Meath, however a final point by a Meath sub in injury time sealed the win for Meath.

Final Score Down 1-06 Meath 0-11

Also a special mention to Bryansford and St. Kilda’s Clara Fitzpatrick, who made her return to county colours.

Next up is a home fixture for Down on the 15th November against Leitrim.
